Slander & Gossip

Slander and gossip are grave sins the church masks as prayer requests or venting. James 4:11 and Proverbs 16:28 call it what it is: destruction.

Slander and gossip are grave sins that the church often masks behind the guise of “prayer requests” or “venting.” Scripture is uncompromising: James 4:11 commands, “Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.” Proverbs 16:28 adds, “A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.” We love to call it “sharing” or “asking for prayer,” but God calls it what it is: destruction. You claim your heart is in the right place because you’re “concerned,” but you are simply sowing discord. There is no loophole for destructive speech, no matter how “reasonable” your venting seems or how much truth you claim is in the report. God is not deceived by clever arguments. If you are tearing down another person, you are directly violating the command to love your neighbor and failing the test of a tamed tongue. God doesn’t look at the intent you claim; He looks at the fruit of your speech. Stop masking your sin as piety and repent of the poison on your tongue.
