Seek First the Kingdom
We compartmentalize our lives, carving out a corner for Jesus while career and status dominate the rest. Matthew 6:33 calls for total surrender — seek first the kingdom of God.
We have perfected the art of compartmentalizing our lives, carving out a small corner for Jesus while the rest of our existence is dominated by career, status, and family ego. But Christ did not call us to be part-time followers; He called us to total surrender. Matthew 6:33 is the non-negotiable heartbeat of the disciple: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” People treat this as a Sunday sentiment, while Monday through Saturday is spent in the relentless pursuit of worldly security. You justify putting your career or your family’s social standing above the direct call of Christ as “being responsible,” but God calls it idolatry when it usurps His place.
Now, understand this: Scripture does not command us to abandon our duties. A man is indeed tasked with providing for his own; as 1 Timothy 5:8 warns, “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Furthermore, as Paul notes in 1 Corinthians 7:33, a married man is rightly concerned with the “things of the world” — how to please his wife and care for his family. But there is a massive chasm between fulfilling these God-given responsibilities and turning them into an excuse for greed, status-seeking, or the neglect of the Kingdom.
When your primary concern becomes the promotion of your own name, the accumulation of excess wealth, or the vanity of your household’s social standing over the advancement of God’s will, you have shifted your loyalty to the wrong kingdom. You cannot serve two masters; if the Kingdom is not your absolute priority, it is not your life — it is merely your hobby. God is not interested in being a consultant in your affairs; He is the King who demands your total allegiance. Fulfill your duties to your family with diligence, but stop building your own empire. Start investing in the only Kingdom that will survive the fire.
