What Does “This Do in Remembrance of Me” Mean?

At the Last Supper, Jesus commands an ongoing practice: break the bread and share the cup in remembrance of Him — His body given, His blood shed. Communion is not an optional ritual but a commanded, repeated proclamation of His death until He comes.

The Command of Jesus — Luke 22:19

Luke 22:19 KJV

“And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”

Honest Reflection

Jesus does not leave this meal as a one-time event — He commands that it be done again and again in His memory. 'This do' is an imperative: repeat it, keep doing it, make it a practice. The Lord's Supper is not an optional addition for those who appreciate ceremony; it is a direct command from the Lord Himself. When you come to the table, are you actually remembering Him — the weight of His body broken, the cost of His blood poured out — or has repetition turned obedience into routine? He commanded this. Are you doing it, and are you doing it with remembrance?

The Challenge

The next time you receive communion, come with deliberate preparation rather than passive participation. Before that day, read one of the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion — meditate on what He endured and why. Then when you take the bread and cup, let that meditation make the elements real: His body, His blood, poured out for you. Do not let it pass without remembering the One who commanded it.

Kingdom

When you do this in remembrance of Him, the Lord's Supper becomes what He intended: a proclamation of His death until He comes. Every time you take the bread and the cup, you make a declaration — with your body, not just your words — that what He did on the cross is the ground of your life, your rescue, and your hope. The table is a command, and obeying it is an act of proclamation.
