Jesus doesn't say tolerate your enemies or avoid them. He commands love — active, costly love toward people who have hurt you, dismissed you, or treated you with contempt. The actions He lists are concrete: bless them, do good to them, pray for them. Think of a person who has wronged or despised you. Are you blessing that person? Praying for them? Doing good to them? This command asks for more than you can naturally produce.

Name the person right now — the one who has wronged you, slandered you, treated you with contempt. Pray for their well-being today. Bless them. The next time you have opportunity, do good to them. This is not a feeling; it is action — costly, concrete, more than you can produce on your own.
When you love your enemies, you reveal the Father's character. He loves without distinction, blesses the ungrateful, shows kindness to the hostile. This obedience makes you His child — acting as He acts, loving as He loves. You draw near to Him as you extend the same impartial, unearned love He pours out daily.
