Jesus commands non-retaliation: when personally insulted or wronged, absorb the offense rather than striking back in kind. It is not a ban on all self-defense or justice, but a refusal to repay evil for evil — trusting God to vindicate instead of asserting your own rights.
Matthew 5:39 KJV“But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

Jesus commands non-retaliation — absorbing an offense without striking back. This runs so deeply against human instinct that most people find a way to reframe it rather than obey it. It requires trusting God to vindicate and refusing to assert your rights when you have been wronged. Think of the last time someone wronged or humiliated you: did you absorb it and leave it with God, or did you find some way to respond in kind?
Turn the other cheek. When someone wrongs or humiliates you, absorb it — don't strike back, don't retaliate, don't defend your honor. The next time you are personally insulted or injured, refuse to respond in kind. Leave vindication to God. Let the offense stand without answering it. This is not about accepting false blame or enabling injustice; it is about refusing to repay personal wrong with wrong. Trust God and do not retaliate.
When you refuse to retaliate, you break the cycle of vengeance that grips human relationships. Absorbing injury without passing it on stops the spread of harm. One act of wrong does not spiral into a chain of escalating conflict. This obedience disarms hostility not with force but with trust in the Father's justice. You draw near to Him as you release your right to repay.
