What Is True Discipleship? Following Christ, Not a Teacher or Brand

True discipleship isn't fandom for a favorite teacher or theological camp — it's obedience to Christ's commands. What 1 Corinthians 1:12-13, Matthew 23:3, and John 14:15 teach about the difference.

Scripture calls us to be disciples of Jesus Christ alone — not of a favorite teacher, influencer, or theological camp. True discipleship is measured by obedience to His commands, not by whose name you follow.

In our era of personality-driven ministry, we have redefined the word “disciple.” We treat it like an enrollment process in a seminar or a membership to a club. But in Scripture, to be a disciple is to be a life-long apprentice to one Master. The danger of our age is that we are no longer making disciples of Jesus; we are making disciples of ourselves, of our favorite influencers, or of our specific theological “camps.”

Paul addressed this corruption directly in 1 Corinthians 1:12-13. The church in Corinth was fracturing into factions: “I follow Paul,” “I follow Apollos,” “I follow Cephas,” “I follow Christ.” Paul’s response is biting: “Is Christ divided?” When we prioritize the messenger over the Message, we are not growing in maturity; we are participating in schism. If your “discipleship” leads people to fixate on your specific brand of teaching, your clever insights, or your unique “method,” you are not making disciples of Christ. You are building an audience for yourself. If you are teaching others to follow you rather than the raw, unvarnished commands of God, you are leading them into a house built on sand.

Jesus issued a terrifying warning in Matthew 23:15: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15 KJV) This is the inevitable result of blind men leading the blind. If you have not surrendered your own life to the total authority of Christ’s commands, you have no business training others. A teacher who loves their own platform more than the truth of Scripture is not a discipler; they are a dealer of spiritual delusions. When the religious elite neglect the commands of God in favor of their own traditions or status, they are not producing disciples of the Kingdom—they are producing disciples of their own hypocrisy.

Jesus gave a sober directive regarding the corrupt leaders of His day: “All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” (Matthew 23:3 KJV) This is the acid test of true discipleship: Do you yourself keep His commands?

Jesus was unequivocal about the requirement for belonging to Him: “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;” (John 8:31 KJV) A true disciple is not defined by whose book they have read or whose conference they attended; they are defined by a life of obedience. The standard is set by Christ Himself: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 KJV)

We are called to “teach them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). Not some of it. Not the parts that are culturally palatable. Not the parts that grow a church, a brand, or a following. All of it. As Jesus said, “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” (John 15:8 KJV)

If your discipleship does not produce a person who obeys the commands of Christ—even when it costs them their comfort, their reputation, and their social standing—then it is not biblical discipleship. It is merely the perpetuation of your own ego.
