We are living in an era where the church has become a marketplace of personal preference, where the primary qualification for a teacher is how well they make the congregation feel about themselves. 2 Timothy 4:3 provides a haunting diagnosis of this state: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;” (2 Timothy 4:3 KJV) People today do not seek the counsel of God; they seek curated voices that validate their lifestyle, soften their convictions, and justify their compromises. They flee from any message that calls for repentance, holiness, or the “narrow way,” labeling such truth as “harsh” or “unloving.”

This is not a matter of different styles of preaching; it is a matter of rejecting the authority of the Word. When you choose a teacher because they tell you what you want to hear, you are not engaging in discipleship—you are engaging in self-idolatry. You are putting yourself in the seat of the judge, deciding which parts of Scripture are acceptable and which should be discarded. But God is not interested in your comfort, and He is not impressed by your favorite teacher’s ability to soothe your conscience. He demands that you submit to the truth, even—and especially—when it cuts against your desires. Stop curating your own doctrines. Stop hunting for teachers who are willing to trade God’s holiness for your happiness. True spiritual maturity is found only when you stop seeking teachers to suit your passions and start seeking the truth that sets you free, regardless of how much it convicts you.
