Biblical Stewardship: What Does It Mean to Manage God's Money?

The modern church often treats the concept of stewardship as a sophisticated excuse for stinginess, using the word to justify hoarding under the guise of “financial responsibility.” People frequently lean on the notion of “stewardship” to shield their wallets, deciding that because they are “managing God’s money,” they are permitted to withhold from helping the needy or supporting the work of the Lord. They ignore the uncomfortable reality that being a steward means you are a manager of assets that do not belong to you, and the Owner has given clear instructions on how those resources should be deployed. This is a fundamental failure of trust. The Scriptures are clear in Proverbs 11:28, which states, “He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.” (Proverbs 11:28 KJV) A fool places his confidence in the security of his bank account, believing that his future is guaranteed by what he can stockpile, while the wise man trusts God alone.

Because the wise man recognizes that his provision comes solely from the Lord, he gives without holding back. As Proverbs 21:26 observes, “He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.” (Proverbs 21:26 KJV), a sentiment echoed in Psalm 112:9: “He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.” (Psalm 112:9 KJV) 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 reminds us, “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7 KJV)

Giving is not a transaction where you “pay” to receive a blessing; it is an act of total surrender. If you find yourself calculating the absolute minimum you can “get away with” giving, or using the label of “stewardship” to justify ignoring the call to support the work of the Lord, you have lost the plot. The wise man gives generously because he understands that he cannot out-give the One who provided everything he has in the first place. Stop using the guise of wisdom to mask a heart of greed. If your trust is truly in God, your hands will be open; if your hands are clenched tight around your money, your trust is in the very currency that is destined to perish.
