What Does “Let Not Thy Left Hand Know What Thy Right Hand Doeth” Mean?

Jesus commands generosity so free of self-interest that you don’t even keep an inner ledger of it. Give without audience, recognition, or mental credit — cutting away the pride that hides inside giving. The Father who sees in secret is the only audience that matters.

Take Jesus at His Word Today

Honest Reflection

Jesus commands secret generosity — giving without any audience, without recognition, without even letting your own mind catalog what you've done. This requires a purity of motive that cuts against the pride that hides inside most of your giving. Ask yourself honestly: when you give, is there any part of you that wants to be noticed, remembered, or appreciated for it? That is exactly the thing Jesus is telling you to cut away.

The Challenge

Give today so that no one knows. Not your spouse, not the recipient, not the friend you usually tell. Identify someone in real need — you already know who — and meet it anonymously before the day ends. No card, no hint, no way for them to trace it back. Let your left hand be ignorant of what your right hand does. The Father who sees in secret is your only audience.

Kingdom

When you obey this command, your motive for giving becomes purely about the need met, not your ego. You are drawn deeper into relationship with the Father who sees in secret. Your heart aligns with His gaze alone. You learn to trust His unseen reward, and intimacy with Him replaces the hunger for human recognition.
