What Does “Enter Into Thy Closet and Pray in Secret” Mean?

Jesus commands a private prayer life with no audience but the Father — a shut door, a secret place, honest words. The command targets performance: prayer done to be seen is already paid in full by human approval. Real intimacy with God grows where no one is watching.

The Command of Jesus — Matthew 6:6

Matthew 6:6 KJV

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Honest Reflection

Jesus commands private prayer — a real, personal conversation with the Father away from every audience. This is the difference between performing religion and actually talking to God. How much of your prayer life happens in secret, where no one knows and no one can see? Do you actually go to God privately, or is most of your prayer said in groups, at meals, or in church — but rarely alone?

The Challenge

Shut the door and pray to the Father in private. Today. Not later, not when it feels right — now. Find a room, close the door, and pour out what is actually on your heart. No script, no performance, no thought of being seen. Let Him be your only audience. This is what the command requires.

Kingdom

When you genuinely obey this command, seeking the Father in secrecy, it deepens your relationship with Him. You discover an awareness of His constant presence. He alone sees your heart and hears your unvarnished prayers. Through this hidden communion, you know Him not just as God, but as your Father who is in secret.
